Naruto, Sakura, and Jiraiya end up in a town that is worse than the one they were chased out of. Jiraiya heads off and leaves Naruto and Sakura to get food. Along the way, they find the ninja that attacked them before injured and fight some Sound ninja to save them. Who is this mysterious ninja and what do they know about the Hidden Sound Village?
Jiraiya tells Naruto and Sakura that they should head for the most bustling outpost in the Land of Rice Paddies in order to gather information on The Sound Village. Jiraiya is happy to go, but Naruto and Sakura feel that the only reason he is doing it is for more "research". They get to the town and it looks like a rough place. Jiraiya sees some places that he want to check out and tells Naruto and Sakura to use some of his money to get themselves a meal and meet him at the temple outside of town. Naruto reassures Sakura that they will find Sasuke. All of a sudden, the ninja from before appears from out of the bushes. They are attacked by some strange men. Naruto and Sakura use their substitution jutsu to get away with the injured ninja. The three men know that they must be looking for Orochimaru. Jiraiya finds a woman who claims to know someone who knows about the Sound Village. She leads him into a trap. The men fire their arrows at Jiraiya, but he uses his hair jutsu to deflect them. Then the gangs leader attacks Jiraiya and Jiraiya uses his Rasengan on him and knocks him through a wall. The gang prepare to attack again, but their leader stops them because he realizes that Jiraiya is one of the Legendary Sanin. Jiraiya learns some information from them. Meanwhile Naruto and Sakura have taken the ninja to the temple. Sakura makes Naruto leave the temple so she can tend to the ninja's wound. Sakura tells Naruto he can come back in and it is revealed that the ninja is a pretty girl named Sasame. Then the Sound Ninja from before begin their attack on Naruto, Sakura, and Sasame.
