Shikamaru devises a plan to ambush Tayuya and Sakon and steal the barrel. All goes well, but Orochimaru grows impatient and switches bodies early to prevent himself from dying. Kimimaro, a former member of what was once the Sound Five, promises to grant his master one final wish by bringing Sasuke to him.
Kiba, Shikamaru and Naruto are on pursuit of Tayuya and Sakon who have Sasuke in the barrel, but the sun is setting. The two Sound ninjas are unhappy it has taken them so long to only complete a third of the mission. Flashback to earlier in the chase when the Sound ninjas ran into the more experienced Leaf Village ninjas as well as the later run-in with Shikamaru's group; both of which lead to great delays in accomplishing the sound ninja's mission.
Back with the Konoha trio in pursuit, they discuss the plan to retrieve the barrel. Although Naruto and Kiba at first balk at the idea of waiting until sunrise; once they hear Shikamaru's thought process they realize he's a leader with the best interests of not only the mission but also those trying to complete the mission at heart and they agree to follow his lead.
Tayuya and Sakon discuss the possibility of getting Sasuke to Orochimaru in time. They are optimistic despite the current circumstances.
In Orochimaru's lair, Orochimaru is crying out in pain and bleeding from the effects of his cursed arms the Third Hokage left him with. While the absence of Sasuke, Kabuto insists Orochimaru transfer to another container in order to preserve Orochimaru's desire to gain immortality. Kabuto goes into a prison hold and releases all those into a holding area. He tells them he will release one of them – but just one and then leaves. The implication is they will fight each other until there is only one left alive.
